How to Upload Images for Use by eBay

Are you planning to sell items at eBay but you can't figure out how to provide a picture of it?  You need to place a picture of it on the Internet and figure out the URL web address so that you can provide it to eBay. This help file is only designed to help you in posting the pictures. To get information on the actual process of posting and selling items you need to visit eBay's site.

* * You may want to print this out! Please read entire page.* *

It is assumed that you already have WS_FTP setup on your computer and the image(s) are already stored in a directory on your computer. If you do not have WS_FTP then click here to download it. This "lite" version is available free for personal use.

After you have downloaded and installed WS_FTP, you are ready to get started.

1. Activating your web space

If you have never set up space on our web server for a web page you will need to do this now. The process is quite simple. Go here to activate your free space now. Follow the directions. Once this is done you are ready to go to the next step.

2. Setting up WS_FTP

Open WS_FTP.

A "Session Properties" box will appear in the center of the screen. Click the "New" button and enter the following:

  • Profile Name: My eBay Pictures ( any descriptive name is OK )

  • Host Name: home.westpa.net

  • Host Type: "Auto Detect

  • User ID: enter your username

  • Password: enter your password

  • Put a check in the "Save Password" box

  • Click the Advanced Tab

  • Put a check in "Passive Transfers"

  • Click "OK

The Session Properties window will disappear and reveal a split screen.

3. The Main Screen:

The right screen represents your area on our server.

The left screen represents your computer's hard drive. Navigate to the location on your computer (the left screen) where you have saved your images. To save these directories so you don't have to re-navigate each time, click on the "Options" button, select the "Sessions" tab, Click the "Save Current Directories as Connection Directories".

Now you are ready to upload the image(s):

Highlight the image(s) in the left screen that you want to send to our computer (server).

Click on the arrow pointing to the right. That will send the image to our computer. Wait until the program indicates that transfer is complete. The image is now available and should be viewable on the internet at your web site. To test this  it out type something similar to the following: (Of course replace loginname with your login name and replace mypicture.jpg with the real name.)

(URL example: http://loginname.home.westpa.net/mypicture.jpg)

If it does not show up, you probably did something wrong. Recheck the directions above and make sure that you actually uploaded the image(s).

If it shows up in your browser then you did it correctly. That is the URL you can provide to eBay as a link to that picture.

Finally:

To upload images in the future just open WS_FTP, select the eBay profile, and click the "Connect" button. WS-FTP will open up to the same locations on your computer and on our server. Select any images you want to upload and you are ready to upload them.

Please Note: We are in no way affiliated with eBay nor do we receive any payment of any kind from them. This webpage is designed only to help our customers. Questions regarding specifics of eBay policies and practices must be directed to eBay. Instructions are based on WS_FTP but any FTP software should work.
